WHAT TO EXPECT

The Paddington we know today is a hub for all that is chic and sophisticated. But if we rewind less than a century, we find ourselves in a strange slum world where rival street gangs ruled the alleyways by day; infamous cat burglars crept between terrace houses by night and shocking local stories made Sydney’s headlines each week.

Rewind another half century and we find ourselves in an eccentric Victorian era of up-and-coming urban avenues — each bound by bustling corner pubs — while horse-drawn omnibuses carried the city’s first commuters along newly cobbled carriageways towards town.

And yet another half-century back: we find ourselves in a windmill-driven village on the outskirts of Sydney where convicts were busy converting an ancient Indigenous water source into a supply stream for Australia’s first legal spirit distillery (not tequila but gin unfortunately).

Now fast-forward to 24th July 2024, when we invite you to join us for a one-of-a-kind evening of dinner, drinks, and debaucherous tales.

BIO ON MAX BURNS-MCRUVIE

Max Burns-McRuvie is a Sydney crime historian and event host who specialises in storytelling sessions that fuse heritage with hospitality.

His unique blend of tastes and tales has brought to life Sydney events such as Cocktails and Crime Stories; History Through Whisky; Gin City Sin City; Rum and Rascals; and Wine, Crime and Dine.

Max is also the owner-operator of local tours business Journey Walks that runs regular culture, crime and history tours of old Sydney suburbs such as Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Kings Cross, The Rocks, Balmain, Millers point, Manly and Paddington.

To back up his nerdiness: Max holds a MA of Museum and Heritage Studies from USYD; BA of English and History at UNSW and Honours in European History at UVA (Amsterdam).

His family moved from Melbourne to Paddington in the 1960s. And he is very proud that his name is still cemented in childish scribbles across Paddington’s pavements from the 1990s.
